Disraeli Avenue

Well I did promise you news(!)

I’ve been spinning for the last few days.
Round and round and round.

As you know, I submitted my novella Disraeli Avenue to Clare Christian at The Friday project.
She read it over the weekend and rang on Monday afternoon, to talk through the proposed idea.

Since then we have completed two edits and I've written an additional section.
(and Clare has had to deal with far too many phone calls from me)

The proposed idea, or rather now the supported idea.
I will be releasing Disraeli Avenue as a free download, an eBook.
A free read.

There will be a voluntary donations page, supporting the charity One in Four.
One in Four
is an organisation run for and by people who have experienced sexual abuse.

Since Monday.
I feel that I have been covered in a down pouring of kindness.
I really am overwhelmed and very tearful.
People have listened to me, really listened.
I feel that my urgency, my need, has been understood.

I can't find the words.

I contacted Joanna Chisholm from Wordsense Ltd.
Joanna was the typesetter for In Search of Adam and for Black Boxes.
I telephoned her, explained the project and asked if she could offer her services, free of charge.
(I’ve never done anything like that before, never ever)
Joanna said yes, without hesitation.
She now has the final manuscript and is working with it.

I spoke to people at One in Four, telling them my plans.
I was left emotional.
There are so many who need to hear a voice that understands, truly understands.
And this organisation is full of people who comprehend, recognise, accept.
I looked at other charities, each has a need, but my helping One in Four is for Jude.
(I hope this is making sense)
And I know that even the smallest of donations will make a difference to them.

And this morning I contacted Emma at SnowAngels who designed both of the covers for Black Boxes and In Search of Adam.
I asked if she would design the front cover, free of charge.
(again I was cringing at my barefaced cheek)
I had an email back within minutes.
I filled out a briefing form.
And.
Well, you can see the result.
The cover is stunning, again.

So, over the next few days, I’ll be spinning.

I’m a lot out of my depth, but am learning/asking lots of random questions.

If anyone thinks that they can help in any way, please let me know.
I’m open to ideas.
There is the whole promoting, spreading the word to consider.

I’ve a few more ideas, which I’ll try and blog about as and when.
(But in the meantime I’d rather like someone to do a video of one of the monologues)
(anyone got a strong Geordie accent and can act?)

(I am only part joking)

All help will be acknowledged, is being acknowledged.
But more than that.
I feel like I’m doing something that has worth.

There’s no financial gain here, for those involved.

I wish I could find the words.
But I can't express what I really need to say.

I’m churning and spinning and on the verge of tears.

I guess that I have a renewed faith.
And more than that, I have a voice.

Disraeli Avenue will be launched in February.

Note to reader:

For those who don't know.
Disraeli Avenue offers 32 flashes from the houses that make up the street that Jude once lived on.
It's a novella.
(I love that word)
Many of the characters are featured within In Search of Adam.
Tales of debt, infidelity, love and loss all combine and weave into a mosaic of working class life.

Wow, wow, wow.

I am only online very briefly and have responded as soon as I have read it, like 5 seconds ago, so have no ideas (as yet) but (if you didn't know) I am a former marketing professional and husband is PR genius. Let me know if we can help.

Oh Caroline how wonderful! What a fantastic idea and lovely people are. It makes me feel all fuzzy just reading about it.

When it's done I'll promote the bum off it in my online writing groups. What a great cause.

What age actress are you looking for? I've got an actress friend but, if she's not suitable (she's 34 and isn't a Geordie but lived there for 3 years so may be able to do one), she'll have lots of friends. Also, you might want to google "The Liar's League". They use actors to read out short stories and I think the actors do it for free. They might have a Geordie (there was certainly a Scot when I went to one of their nights). They're based in London, is that any good?

There are also a few actresses on my writing communities so I could put out a call for you. Just let me know x

Leatherdykeuk - can't I be something other than Nice??? Please.

Cally - thanks honey. There are a number of monolgues and the age range from 16 - 70s. I'll do a google and see what I come up with. I like the idea of exploring voice with it all ... but I may simply be losing the plot. It'd be ideal 'radio' material. I have this whole language/voice thing within my writing and I really need to get myself some new themes. :)

Thanks for all being so supportive. really really HUGE thanks yous.

ps. I really LOVE the cover ... it's got my name on it. This is all a bit surreal.

Just fantastic, Cas. And one in four must be utterly delighted at the kind of publicity this will provide for their work, not to mention the donations of course. I know you have to lock the children in the garden shed in order to write, but isn't it soooo worth it?

B said...

Oh I have tears coming. How wonderful.

All my Geordie friends are shy! I will see if I can think of anyone :)

If you need someone to write to the Chronicle and tell them they should do a feature I can do that for you?!

You are amazing. If you weren't so lovely I'd be so incredibly jealous ;) xx

that is truly fabulous news Caroline! Your year is getting off to be a great start.

P.S.
Saw Simon last night at American Idol and I thought of you. :D

Pacha said...

Oh Caroline!

This is all truely lovely news.

I'm thrilled that in February we will be getting to read your novella! I'm really really really excited about that.

And I am blown away at how this idea of yours has come together so swiftly and wonderfully and beautifully (the cover is gorgeous again).

It's all rather perfect.

You're an inspiration to us all!

SpiralSkies said...

That is absolutely terrific! Isn't it amazing when proper clever people give themselves up for free? They wouldn't do it for just anyone or any project you know.

Am smiling for you. Well done. X

Kate said...

Hooray!

I am so very very pleased for you!

Caroline said...

Kate - thanks honey x

Jen - it is amazing and it shocks me. I hate asking people to do things for me, but I've realised that this is a project that I can't do alone. This has, again, changed my mindset.

Pacha - thanks honey. I'm blown away too :) x

Menchie - :) Yesterday was a good day ... ooooh and Simon .... *sigh*

b - yip, go ahead. Tell the Chronicle and anoyone else that you can think of. Let me know x

Ms M - :) I'm kind of hoping that it all comes together ... fingers crossed x

Really love the idea, and the cover, and the fact that it will help a cause that is so worth supporting.
The energy in your writing and thinking and blogging, sometimes bursts off the screen.

Caroline said...

Paul - thank you. I do worry about declarations and posting on here. I can't begin to tell you how nervous I'm feeling, but yes there is a lot of energy surrounding this project.

Lucy D - thanks honey x

Hello Caroline.
Sounds like an interesting and worthwhile project.
Zinnia emailed me to suggest that I may be able to help re your Geordie search, but I'm guessing that my watered down south Durham brogue wouldn't be Geordie enough, or in fact Geordie at all.
Might be worth your firing off a speculative email to the BBC Tyne/Radio Newcastle people and/or any local arts message boards. University drama societies could also be worth a punt.
Wishing you well.

Caroline said...

Shane - South Durham brogue sounds ideal for a monologue of a father who is from 'over the water.' I'll try and find your email on your site to let you know what I'm thinking - hope that's ok. Thanks for the comment (and thanks Zinnia)

I love coming here -- your posts always cheer me up, even when you aren't feeling so great. Thank you for that.

Congratulations on Disraeli Avenue. You have a great angel/friend in Clare Christian and you deserve all the kindness shown to you, as a person and as a writer.

Yay Caroline! So cool! So fabulous! So wonderful! (Apply all 3 statements to you and your writing!) I am really looking forward to reading it. I always wonder what the characters of books I read do after I finish or what their 'bigger picture' is.
So happy for you!

David - you know what, you're very right about Clare. She has wings x

A day late but great idea Caroline! Anyway I can help just ask and in the mean time I'll put me thinking cap on. You're very clever and thoughtful!

Deborah Rey said...

Super, super news, Caroline. For some odd reason I had the feeling this would happen. Happy it was the right one.
There, someone who 'heard' you, that's what it's all about ... again, isn't it?
More than happy for and with you.
Hugs,
Deborah
